If Blue Is The Warmest Color had become a film a few years ago and I’d seen it then, perhaps I would have lived my life differently.
I think it is a masterfully crafted film in every respect, but to just use the simple term of “film” does not fully capture its essence. This is an experience in the most fundamental sense of the word:it moves you deeply, then when you’re vulnerable, mercilessly scatters you, invading your thoughts so some nights you find yourself still awake, lost in its embrace. It explores the entire spectrum of human emotion: wild, passionate love and joy; calm reflection and peace; fearful confusion, regret, and loneliness; crushing rage, betrayal, and denial; and a howling, drowning wave of such profound despair, that although its echoes may eventually recede into a tolerable tide, it is ceaseless.
Blue Is The Warmest Color will teach you to know your soul and be accustomed to the presence of your heart, what it means to participate in the human experience. Then, it will brutally rip your heart and soul out and present both in their purest state for your consideration.
I emerged a different person from this experience and I am so glad to have felt it. I think the best art provides us with an understanding and a new perspective on life that we did not have before. Of course, with any art form, people bring their already familiar experiences to bear on something new that they interpret before them. In my case especially, it is almost impossible for me to remain “objective” about Blue Is The Warmest Color because I am still stunned at how many similarities there are between it and what happened in my own life.
So like all of my rants, this one is very long-in fact, it’s the longest one I’ve ever done. You’ve been warned! But to discuss Blue Is The Warmest Color at any other length would be an injustice. Therefore, my analysis will have three sections: I-The Color Blue: Vision and Symbolism, II-Adele and Emma, and III- Love Makes Us Eternal. Of course, there will be spoilers throughout, so if you haven’t already seen the film please don’t read any further. I highly recommend that people watch it and understand it in their own unique way. This is mine.
